Cape Hatteras on the Outer Banks. Cape Hatteras is almost a 90° bend on the chain of long narrow barrier islands sometimes called the "Graveyard of the Atlantic." because of the hundreds of ships that have sunk here.
North Carolina's coast can be treacherous because of merging currents and the Gulf stream.
Part of the coast faces south into the current; the other part runs parallel to the gulf stream. Storms often drove ships into the Outer Banks and some 100 plus year old pieces are still visible from the shore. There are still 4 lighthouses that were put in place on the banks to warn the sailors. The black and white twist above the red brick base of the Hatteras lighthouse is the most renowned.
